November 13, 2011 - Sharing the Love of Jesus


Today the focus of Happy Club was on the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. Our church was involved in collecting these boxes of Christmas gifts for children around the world who would otherwise go without. Today, our pastor, Michael Helms, shared with the children in the 8:30 service and one of our associate pastors, Erica Cooper, shared in the 11:00 service as some of the children explored the contents of a typical shoebox. They learned how these simple gifts can help share the love of Jesus.

November 6, 2011 - Making Houses from Earth Blocks Part 2


On this first Sunday following All Saints Day on November 1, we chose to reaffirm our faith and recognize those of our church family who have died during this past year. During our 8:30 worship service, our pastor spoke to the children about "Why We Cry."



During the 11:00 a.m. worship service, the pastor chose to revisit the earth block housing that he had talked about the previous week because one of the children present had participated in the block-making on Saturday, November 5th.

October 30, 2011 - Making Houses from Dirt


Over the weekend, First Baptist Church of Jefferson, Georgia hosted a training workshop on making bricks from dirt with the hopes of carrying this technology to Liberia and Peru to build housing for families needing it. This training was sponsored by our pastor and his Bricks for Ricks Foundation. During the Sunday services, the trainer, Adam DeJong shared his testimony, and our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, talked with the children about these special bricks.

September 18, 2011 - The Importance of Learning to Serve


Today, in our 11:00 a.m. service, we were ordaining two men who have not previously served as deacons. Since the primary function of the deacon is to be a servant, our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, talked with the children about the importance of learning to serve.



In the 8:30 service, one of our Associate Pastors, Rev. Erica Cooper, preached about the need to recognize the sin in our own lives even when our culture would not consider it sin. She then talked with the children about the Key to Making Right Choices.


September 11, 2011 - Those Who Run Toward Danger


On this 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attack, our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, focuses on those who run toward or into danger to save us. We remember the sacrifice of so many on that day. But, we also remember the work of God through Christ Jesus, who didn't run away from the cross, but also laid down His life for us.

Is it real or is it fake? An important question for retailers, but an even more important question when it deals with love. August 21, 2011 - Recognizing God's Voice



Sheep can recognize the voice of their shepherd. Can we recognize the voice of our Savior? Today was the start of our Spiritual Renewal Emphasis with guest speaker, Dr. Jim Dant and guest musician, Kyle Matthews. Kyle had the opportunity to speak with our children and he talked about recognizing God's voice.

August 14, 2011 - The Lord's Supper



On this day at First Baptist Church of Jefferson, Georgia, we celebrated the Lord's Supper or Communion. And, we did it early enough in the service that the children who are usually in Children's Worship for the latter part of the service were able to observe this solemn event. For Happy Club, our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, talked with the children about the meaning of the Lord's Supper, helping them by both sharing the meaning and background, as well as encouraging them to ask questions.

July 17, 2011 - The Meaning of Prayer



In our services, we were emphasizing the importance of prayer, so our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, chose to also talk about the meaning of prayer with the children. As a part of this, he had invited the children to write some prayers of their own and bring them.

Unfortunately, the American Dream with its call for independent action and self-determination has often caused us to forget that we are dependent upon God. With an object lesson from the vine (in this case, a tomato vine), our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, talks with the children about our need to stay connected to God.

June 26, 2011 - The Dangers of Being Too Busy


What approach did Jesus take to life? What approach would Jesus take to life? Would He be tied up with email, blogs, text messaging, cell phones, computers, mp3 players, tablets, etc.? Perhaps He would use these for spreading His love, but He often chose solitude and reflection.

Today, Dr. Michael Helms, our pastor, demonstrates to the children the dangers of being too busy with the abundance of technology, and not spending time with others and with God.

For the second year in a row, we have kicked off the week by having a Family Worship Experience in our morning services with drama and more contemporary music. May 29, 2011 - Tribute to Our Veterans



On this Sunday before Memorial Day, our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, talked with the children about those men and women who served in the United States military down through the years. One of the issues that he raised was that hatred of others can be changed by knowing someone personally who was once considered an enemy.

During the Sundays of Lent this year, we have been looking at the theme of listening, especially as it relates to listening to the New Testament during the 40 days of Lent. Today, Rev. Erica Cooper, emphasizes our need to listen to nature as it proclaims the greatness of our God. She helps the children with this concept as she retells "The Legend of the Dogwood Tree."

Some interruptions can seem to be bad, or at least very inconvenient, and others can be good. Our Senior Pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, along with our Youth Pastor, Justin Safley, demonstrate this to the children in a humorous way. All to say that regardless of the cause, interruptions can be viewed as opportunities of ministry. Jesus, Himself was never too busy for interruptions.

March 6, 2011 - Creative Ways to Share the Word of God



Today in worship, our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, was using the theme of "Faith Comes by Hearing." He was specifically encouraging the congregation to participate in the "You've Got the Time" program of listening to the entire New Testament during the 40 days of Lent. With the children, he shared one way that the Faith Comes by Hearing organization, who put together this program, provides ways for people around the world to be able to hear scripture - one of the creative ways to share God's word - the Bible.

January 23, 2011 - Different Types of Christian Music



On this Sunday, January 23, 2011, we had a guest speaker, Dr. Jon Duncan, Music Specialist with the Georgia Baptist Convention, preaching on Discovering Biblical Worship. In coordination with this theme, our pastor, Dr. Michael Helms, talked with the children about the different types of Christian music using the term "genre." Four examples were included: classical, hymn, rap, and contemporary.
